Galaxie 500
Today (+ Uncollected)
20|20|20
When Galaxie 500's Today was released in 1988, it set off a chain reaction of quiet explosions still being felt. Never before had a record so emphasized the calming elements of rock music, transforming what at first seems like a collection of bridges into fully realized songs. And one can draw a straight line from here to the many groups they influenced, like Low, Belle & Sebastian, and Bon Iver.

Galaxie 500
This Is Our Music (+ Copenhagen)
20|20|20
After producing two albums celebrated by a thirsty underground network of fans, Galaxie 500 released what turned out to be their unexpected swansong, This Is Our Music. The title is an intentionally declarative statement. After being labeled masters of the disengaged and forlorn, Damon Krukowsi, Dean Wareham, and Naomi Yang delivered a full-length comprised of their most stately material.

Black Tambourine
S/t
Slumberland
They released only a handful of songs their two-year lifetime, but Black Tambourine has been hugely influential in the world of indie music. Conceived as an explicitly pop band pop bands were pretty rare in America, they wore their influences on their sleeves: The Jesus and Mary Chain, of course, but also folks like Phil Spector, Smokey Robinson, Love, The Ramones, Shop Assistants, Pastels, 14 Iced Bears, Orange Juice and the list goes on.

Galaxie 500
On Fire (+ Peel Sessions)
20|20|20
On Fire is widely recognized as the canonic pinnacle of Galaxie 500's career. The artwork conveys this, with a low-angle shot of the band, looking up towards an amber sky. This record marked the realization of their signature sound. Nowhere is it clearer than on the album opener, "Blue Thunder," the closest a song can come to waves crashing on a beach in song form.

Hooded Menace
Never Cross The Dead
Profound Lore
Lasse Pyykkoe is a legend of sorts in Finland's underground death metal scene, first surfacing in the band Phlegethon in the late '80s and more recently doing time in killer acts Claws, Vacant Coffin and Acid Witch. But no band has generated more attention than Hooded Menace, who deliver some of the most vile, sludgy death doom today.

Circus Devils
Mother Skinny
Happy Jack Rock
Following their 2009 all-acoustic release Gringo, Circus Devils are back in form with Mother Skinny. This time, the Devils run the gamut from ham-fisted hard rock thumpers to freak-pop to pretty, ethereal numbers, all weaved together in a seamless song-collage. As always, the band is steadfast in their unpredictability.

Internal Tulips
Mislead Into A Field By A Deformed Deer
Planet Mu
Although Planet Mu is known primarily for cutting-edge material on the fringes of dance music, it has also released consistently interesting electronic pop from the likes of Capitol K, Julian Fane, Leafcutter John, Sunken Foal, and even Patrick Wolf. The Internal Tulips is a new project from two guys with a history in bands such as Medicine and Savage Republic who have separately released abstract electronic music on Planet Mu in the past: Brad Laner of Electric Company and Personal Electronics and Alex Graham, a.

K11
Metaphonic Portrait 1230 A.d.
Actual Noise
K11 is the nom de plume of Italian sound artist Pietro Riparbelli. On his last release as K11, 2009's Voices from Thelema (Aurora Borealis) Riparbelli visited the ruins of Aleister Crowley's Thelema Abbey in Cefalu, Sicily, where he documented signals and sounds coming through short-wave radio receivers--an instrumental trans-communication ritual, acting as a conduit for whatever spirits remain in the Abbey.

Vex’d
Cloud Seed
Planet Mu
Vex'd are a legendary duo. Their 2005 album Degenerate was one of the first and most successful dubstep long-players, and remains to this day one of the most respected. By incorporating techstep, jungle, breaks and apocalyptic noir influences into the classic "bass and drums and 140 BPM" format, Degenerate was integral in establishing the template for today's dubstep sound, pushing it beyond its roots in two-step and UK garage.

Floor
Below And Beyond
Robotic Empire
South Florida's Floor were around for roughly ten years and recorded well over a dozen times during their on-and-off existence. Nearly 100 tracks are the result of a decade of persistence amid overall underappreciation, and only in the wake of their demise did underground finally take note. Their huge body of work yielded only a few officially released records, and most of what the band recorded just collected dust in the vaults.

Coffinworm
When All Became None
Profound Lore
Indianapolis, Indiana's Coffinworm made an impact in 2009 with Great Bringer of Night (recorded by Gates of Slumber drummer Bob Fouts), hailed by a number of underground publications as one of the best metal demos of the year. Incorporating influences from the likes of Eyehategod, Deathspell Omega, and Unearthly Trance, the band's vicious and unforgiving combination of sludge, doom and black metal possesses a depraved aura of terror.
